Sabemos que en el siglo XII pasó a manos cristianas y en concreto al Temple, por ello es llamado “castillo Torre de los Templarios”, en el siglo XIII formaba parte de la línea defensiva de castillos conocida como “Línea del Tajo”, en tiempos del rey Dinis se construyó la torre de homenaje de planta poligonal; en tiempos de Alfonso IV se construyó la segunda muralla.
