CASTILLO DE PEÑISCOLA

INFORMACIÓN HISTORICO-ARTÍSTICA

El Castillo de Peñiscola es conocido también como el Castillo del Papa Luna, es una construcción con orígenes árabes, pero fue reconstruido en tiempos de los templarios, ya en el siglo XIII; tras la disolución de la Orden del Temple el castillo paso a la Orden de Montesa; después en el siglo XVI, con Felpe II se construyen fortines abaluartados para defenderse de los piratas berberiscos; más tarde, soportaría en la Guerra de la Independencia, un asedio español contra tropas franceses.

HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC INFORMATION

The castle of Peñiscola is also known as the Castle of Papa Luna, is a construction with Arab origins, but was rebuilt in the time of the Templars, already in the 13 th century; after the dissolution of the Order of the Temple the castle passed to the Order of Montesa; then in the 16 th century with Felipe II build fort fortified to defend against the Berber pirates; later would endure in the War of Independence, a siege of Spanish troops against French, producing strong damages even perceptible.

La entrada general son 5€; horario de verano (21 de marzo a 15 de octubre) es de 9:30-21:30, horario de invierno (16 de octubre a 20 de marzo) es de 10:30-17:30.

Tenemos un castillo con muros de tapial, de época andalusí; sobre ellos los templarios construyeron una capilla, dependencias, caballerizas y torreones cilíndricos.

La cronología del castillo tiene 2 momentos el inicial de los siglos X y XI y uno más moderno del siglo XIII.

We have a castle with walls of tapial, of Andalusí epoch; over them the Templars built a chapel, dependencies, stables and Cylindrical towers.

The chronology of the castle has 2 moments the beginning of the 10 th and 11 th centuries and a more modern phase from 13 th c.

		ACCESO - BAIX MAESTRAT UBICACIÓN BENICARLO: Desde Castellón coger la A-7 o la AP-7 que va directa a Benicarló; recomendamos ir a Vinaroz a la glorieta donde se cruzan la N-340 y la N-232, coger la carretera de Calig y tras pasar la AP-7 girar a la derecha. El poblado se ubica justo junto a la autopista del Mediterráneo. PEÑISCOLA: Peñiscola se encuentra en la costa mediterránea entre Castellón y Tarragona, se accede muy bien por la N-340 o la AP-7. A. CHIVERT: El acceso a Alcalá de Chivert se realiza por la N-340 entre Benicarlo y Oropesa, al norte de Castellón. Hay un pequeño cartel para acceder al castillo en la N-340.				ACCESS -BAIX MAESTRAT LOCATION BENICARLO: Access from Castellón take the A-7 ot the AP-7 that goes direct to Benicarlo. We recommend go to Vinaroz, to roundabout where cross N-340 and N-232, take the road to Calig and after cross AP-7 turn right. The town is located right next to highway of the Mediterranean. PEÑISCOLA: Peñiscola is located on the Mediterranean coast between Castellón and Tarragona, accessed very well by the N-340 or AP-7. A. CHIVERT: Access to Alcalá de Chivert is done by the N-340 between Benicarló and Oropesa, north of Castellón. There are a little signpost to access the castle in the N-340.
