PUENTE ROMANO (ALCÁNTARA)

En Alcántara podemos admirar uno de los mejores puentes romanos de España, es de 6 arcos, sobre 5 pilares, mide 204 metros, construido con duros sillares almohadillados de granito; en el centro dispone de un arco triunfal, para regular el paso; a los pies se construyo un templo en honor al arquitecto, que fue cristianizado con la advocación de San Julián. Cronología del siglo II d.C. (104-106), hay una inscripción en el arco que remonta su construcción a tiempos de Trajano.

ROMAN BRIDGE (ALCÁNTARA)

HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC INFORMATION

In Alcántara we can admire one of the best Roman bridges in Spain, it is 6 arches, on 5 pillars, it measures 204 m. (669 ft), built with hard granite cushioned blocks; in the center it has a triumphal arch to regulate the passage; on one side a temple was built in honor of the architect, more later was Christianized, with the invocation of San Julián. Chronology of the second century AD. (104-106), there is an inscription on the arch, that dates back its construction to Trajan's time.

IGLESIA DE SANTA MARÍA DE ALMOCOVAR - ALCÁNTARA

La iglesia se construyó sobre una mezquita, se erigió sobre el lugar más alto de la villa por ello se llama “al-Mocovar” (el lugar más alto), el templo más antiguo era románico, tiene 3 naves y techumbre de madera; la fachada es una de las pocas fachadas románicas de Extremadura, un gran rosetón corona la fachada; en los siglos XVI y XVII se realizaron reformas, dentro destaca sobre todo el Cristo yacente de Martínez Montañés.

CHURCH OF SANTA MARÍA DE ALMOCOVAR - ALCÁNTARA

HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC INFORMATION

The church was built on a mosque, it was erected on the highest place of the village. It is called “al-Mocavara” (the highest place), the oldest temple was Romanesque, has 3 naves and roof of wood; the façade is one of the few Romanesque façades of Extremadura, a large rose window crowns the façade; in the 16 th and 17 th centuries reforms were made; Inside we highlight the lying Christ of Martinez Montañés.

CONVENTO DE SAN BENITO - ALCÁNTARA

INFORMACIÓN HISTÓRICO-ARTÍSTICA

Este edificio albergó el cuartel general de la Orden Militar de Alcántara, este original edificio data del siglo XVI, es una síntesis de estilos con elementos góticos, platerescos y renacentistas; las arquerías, contrafuertes cilíndricos, heráldica y pináculos góticos le dan al conjunto un aspecto genuino.

Las visitas son guiadas, el horario de verano es de Lunes a Viernes son a las 10:15, 11:15, 12:15, 13:15, 17:00, 18:00 y 19:00; el sábado es a las 11:15, 12:15, 13:15, 17:00, 18:00 y 19:00 (el domingo solo por la mañana); el horario de invierno (octubre-marzo) es de Lunes a Viernes son a las 10:15, 11:15, 12:15, 13:15, 16:30 y 17:30; el sábado es a las 11:15, 12:15, 13:15, 16:30 y 17:30 (el domingo solo por la mañana).

CONVENT OF SAN BENITO - ALCÁNTARA

HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC INFORMATION

Ithis building housed the headquartes of the Military Order of Alcántara, this original building dates from the 16 th century, is a synthesis of styles with Gothic, Plateresque and Romanesque builds; heraldry, arches, cylindrical buttresses, and Gothic pinnacles give to the building a genuine aspect.

The tours are guided, the summer timetable is from Monday to Friday at 10:15 am,11:15 am, 12:15 pm, 1:15 pm, 5:00 pm, 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm; Saturdays is at 11:15 am, 12:15 pm, 1:15 pm, 5;00 pm, 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm; the winter timetable (October-March) is from Monday to Friday at 10:15 am, 11:15 am, 12:15 pm, 1:15 pm 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm; Saturday is at 11:15 am, 12:15 pm, 1:15 pm. 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm (Sunday only in the morning).

ARCO DE LA CONCEPCIÓN - ALCÁNTARA

INFORMACIÓN HISTÓRICO-ARTÍSTICA

El arco forma parte del recinto amurallado, el nombre deriva de la capilla que existía sobre la puerta dedicada a Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, es un arco de medio punto cubierto por bóvedas de arista; encima del arco tenemos el escudo de Felipe III con las armas de España y Portugal; datación (1611).

ARCH OF LA CONCEPCIÓN - ALCÁNTARA

HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC INFORMATION

The arch is part of the walled enclosure, the name derives from the chapel that existed on the door dedicated to Our Lady of the Conception, is a arc of half point covered by ribbed vaults; above the arch we have the shield of Felipe III with the arms of Spain and Portugal, the building dates back to (1611).

CONVENTO DE LAS COMENDADORAS - ALCÁNTARA

INFORMACIÓN HISTÓRICO-ARTÍSTICA

Datación siglo XVI, pero la nave central fue reconstruida en el s. XVIII, destaca en el templo la portada renacentista de Guillen Ferrant. Entre las dependencias destaca el claustro, la sala capitular y el refectorio.

The building dates back to the 16 th cenury, but the nave was rebuilt in the 18 th century, with a Renaissance façade by Guillen Ferrant. In the conventual rooms we emphasize the cloister, the Chapter room and the refectory.

ACCESO A ENCLAVES - ALCÁNTARA

ACCESO

Se accede muy bien por la EX117 que desde la N-521 (Cáceres-Valencia de Alcántara), llega a Alcántara . El arco se ubica a la entrada del pueblo. Las iglesias en el interior. El puente sobre el río Tajo al norte de la ciudad.

ACCESO PARA MINUSVALIDOS

Visita exterior factible al arco de la concepción y al puente romano. Visita no factible para la iglesia de Santa María (rodeado de podium con escaleras), al convento de las comendadoras y al convento de San Benito (varias plantas).

ACCESS TO SITES - ALCÁNTARA

LOCATION

It is accessed very well by the EX-117 which from N-521 (Caceres-Valencia de Alcántara) reaches Alcántara. The arch is located at the entrance of the village. The churches are inside. The bridge over the Tagus River to the north of the city.

ACCESS FOR THE HANDICAPPED

Outside visit for the arche of the Conception and the Roman bridge. Not feasible visit for the church of Santa María (surrounded by a podium with stairs), for the Convent of Comendadoras and the convent of San Benito (several floors).

PUENTE ROMANO DE ALCONETAR

INFORMACIÓN HISTÓRICO-ARTÍSTICA

Los restos del puente romano de Alconetar se ubican en el municipio de Garrovillas. Es un puente de arcos segmentados que por la construcción del embalse de Alcántara fue trasladado junto a Garrovillas, los arcos que se conservan hoy son de 6,7 y 7,2 metros de luz. Cronología del 96 a.C. Es uno de los puentes de arco segmentado más antiguos del mundo. Se cree que fue ideado por Apolodoro de Damasco (el famoso arquitecto de Trajano).

ROMAN BRIDGE OF ALCONETAR

HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC INFORMATION

The remains of the Roman bridge of Alconetar are located in the municipality of Garrovillas. It is a bridge of segmented arches that by the construction of the reservoir of Alcántara was tranferred next to Garrovillas, the arches that are conserved today are of 6,7 m (21,9 ft) and 7,2 m (23,6 ft) of light. Chronology of 96 BC it is one of the oldest segmented arch bridges in the world. It is believed to have been devised by Apolodoro of Damascus (architect of Trajan).
